The Sunburst Sprout
My parents met in Santa Barbara in the Sunburst Spiritual Community where they grew their own food and ran natural food stores. I was born in Kirkland, Washington and moved to Simi Valley, California at the turn of the millennium. I grew up in a whirlwind of theater, dance, singing, and laughter. I went to Point Park University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where I studied ballet and also discovered my fascination with nutrition. Moving to a city where they are famous for putting french fries and mayo on their enormous white bread, meat, and cheese sandwiches, I realized how lucky I was to have parents who brought me up on healthy delicious food. I had never fully appreciated the home made lunches I would bring to school everyday with sprout and avocado sandwiches on whole grain bread. After I graduated I had an insane adventure dancing and flying through the air in Disney's Lion King show as the Blue Love Bird. Being involved in an art form that is based on how the body looks, where weigh-ins happen on a regular basis, I was obviously surrounded by unhealthy eating habits. I started studying nutrition because I wanted to figure out if dancers could remain slender without jeopardizing their health. It was depressing to see friends and fellow cast members completely miserable and living in fear of losing their job due to their weight. After living in Pittsburgh, Paris, Orlando, and Jeju Island, South Korea, I am now back in Southern California where I am blessed to be surrounded by health food stores, raw vegan restaurants, and organic farmer's markets.
I am currently teaching Aerial Yoga and Aerial Dance at Up Flying Yoga and taking prerequisite classes so that I can apply for a doctoral program in physical therapy. My goal is to one day combine my knowledge of nutrition and physical therapy to help dancers and other performing artists maintain optimum physical and emotional health. I created this blog because I love experimenting with new ingredients and making the most delicious, energizing foods!!
